REPRESSION IN ITALY

The shadows of those tragic days in Genoa once more envelop us, imprisoning and depriving of their liberty people, men and women, who were amongst the 300,000 demonstrating against the G8 in Genoa on 20-21 July 2001.

State repression evidently did not come to an end in the streets of Genoa, but still continues in the guise of acusations of subversive association and creating public disorder.

Yesterday imprisoned in Genoa, released in Cosenza today, persecuted tomorrow ... but it all leads back to those July days in 2001 in Genoa. The movement is then forced to chase its recent past in order to defend itslf, in order to re-build, to denounce the death of Giuliani as an execution and not legitimate self-defence, to once again demand the liberty to organize and demonstrate against this climate of segregation and of the smothering of civil rights, be it in Naples, Genoa or Cosenza, by the repressive apparatus of the State.

But the huge demonstration in Florence on 9th November and the social and labour struggles from the north to the south represent acts of real political autonomy. They are a determined statement on the part of those directly involved and an indication that their ideas are spreading, raising political questions of equality and liberty. Questions to which the state and capitalism have no other answers than to intensify the exploitation and repression, to fire workers and reduce social struggles to a question of public order.

The intimidatory reaction of the State is therefore aimed at spreading fear and insecurity in order to dampen the fires of struggle in the South. It is attempting to sow the seeds of the terror of impending repression amongst those who are protesting against Budget cuts and redundancies at Fiat. It is seeking to make use of "strange" decisions of the courts as an element of exchange and to pressurize for bipartisan judicial reform.
